The City of Pilsen (Plzeň) was founded in 1295 by Czech king Wenceslas II at the confluence of four rivers. Today it is the fourth largest city in the Czech Republic, and the capital of West Bohemia, with a population of over 165,000 over an area of just under 140 square kilometres. Its advantageous geographical position between Prague and Germany makes Pilsen a natural economic, cultural and educational centre that is pleasant both to live in and visit. Pilsen is well-known for its brewing tradition. The Plzeňský Prazdroj brewery brews the traditional Pilsner lager known as Pilsner Urquell. The city's name is also connected with the Škoda engineering works.
