From 8 to 12 October 2009 the City of Pilsen will be hosting the final of the 13th year of the International Awards for Liveable Communities.
Pilsen is the first city in the Czech Republic to host this prestigious international contest, devoted to sustainable development, quality of life and the environment in communities. In the contest, which has been held every year since 1997, judges evaluate the approach to individual criteria for sustainable development - enhancement of the landscape, heritage management, environmentally-sensitive practices, community sustainability and planning for the future.
In the towns and cities contest, a total of thirty six delegations went forward to the final in Pilsen. Countries represented include Canada, the UK, Austria, Australia, Poland, the US, China, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Eight towns are from the Czech Republic.Compared to the previous year, when Pilsen, Kladno and Chrudim took part in Dongguan, China, the number of Czech towns has more than doubled. Bolatice, Jaroměř, Říčany, Chrudim, Jihlava, Mladá Boleslav, Tábor and Kladno will all be taking part in the final.
The final, in which representatives of the various towns and cities present their environmental projects to an international jury, lasts for five days, culminating in an awards ceremony on the closing evening. Events from the final will be broadcast on the internet in real time, so it will be possible to follow them from anywhere in the world. The competition will be accompanied by an exhibition of towns and projects and a UN seminar.
The city of Pilsen has taken part in the contest four times in the past, always with notable success. Most recently, last year, the award was for a project regarding the improvement of the water quality of the Bolevec pond. This was one of the reasons why Pilsen was asked by the organising committee if it would like to host the competition. Pilsen has thus gained an opportunity to present itself to the world as a pleasant and hospitable place for meeting and exchanging information at conferences and congresses, and also as a place with unique historical monuments, a rich cultural life and many educational opportunities.
