In the IVth Slovak Congress of Surgery and the XXXVth Common Congress of Slovak and Czech Surgeons with international participation held in Nitra (Sept. 6. - 8, 2006), the Slovak publishing house Litera Medica introduced an extensive monography by Assoc. Prof. Augustín Prochotský, M.D., Ph.D..: Carcinoma of the Colon and Rectum.
The publication consits of 652 pages and was released on September 1, 2006 in 1,500 copies, with complete version of the texts and figures on CD-ROM (ISBN 80-976189-4-0).
The issue of carcinoma of the colon and rectum was last time completely described by Prof. Pelikán in 1984. The publication by Assoc. Prof. Prochotský has successfully filled the many year gap in the professional literature. By the end of the congress, 200 copies were sold.
In the book, the author describes with talent and in detail this frequent and lethal illness. It provides the reader with an objective view on the current options of diagnostics and treatment (surgical and adjuvant or neoadjuvant) of the carcinoma of the colon and rectum. The monography contains the latest medicinal information which are supported by adequate quotations from the local and foreign professional literature (1,930 quotations).
Although the monography is determined mainly for postgraduate education of surgeons, the way of presenting this issue by the author and the gradation of rich illustrated texts (530 mostly color pictures and photos) and 90 charts provide a wide space for use by the first contact doctors and specialists in non-surgical sectors (mainly professionals in internal medicine, gastroenterologists, radiologists and radiation oncologists, chemotherapists, hematologists, and algesiologists) who directly participate in complex treatment and dispensarization of patients with carcinoma of the colon and rectum. The quality of the monography is proved by very positive attitudes of the opponents and by direct responses of the local and foreign surgeons who were quite interested in quick translation of the book into the English language.
As a matter of interest, the cover of the publication was designed by Tibor Huszár, the Slovak world famous photographer.
The monography by Assoc. Prof. Prochotský - Carcinoma of the Colon and Rectum will certainly serve for professional development of the readers and will mainly benefit the patients.
