WEC 2011 Launches Global Discussion on Energy Future

20.04.2011, 13:00

Geneva April 20 (PROTEXT/ots) - An energy supply producing only a small amount of CO2 is feasible and financially viable. This is shown by the Call from Geneva of the World Engineers´ Convention (WEC) 2011. Engineers from all over the world are invited to discuss the theses.

“It is the engineers who render the technology available to the world's population and enable us all to optimally use the ever scarcer resources. However, this also means that engineering must not take place in quiet planning offices. Engineers have to get involved in the political discussion“, says Swiss Federal Councilor Doris Leuthard. This view is shared by the organizers of WEC 2011, who are launching a global discussion through the Call from Geneva. The Call takes positions on burning questions, such as: do engineers have the technical solutions to supply everyone with energy without increasing global warming? Is the implementation of an energy supply that produces only a small amount of CO2 financially viable?

“Europe could convert its energy supply autonomously without any competitive disadvantage”, is one of the conclusions of the Call from Geneva summarized by Ruedi Noser, President of WEC 2011 and Member of the Swiss National Council. The energy situation in other regions, such as China and the USA, is part of the discussion in the blog in http://www.wec2011.org. Blog contributions will be incorporated into a declaration, which will be adopted at WEC 2011.

At WEC 2011 more than 2,000 engineers, researchers, and representatives from politics and business from about 100 countries will meet and discuss solutions for a sustainable energy future.
