Ease of Use, Adds New Options for E-Business Security Seattle, Wash. (PROTEXT) - New Version Makes SecurityManagement Easier, Adds Spam Mail Filtering And IPSec Dial-Up VPNOptions. WatchGuard Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: WGRD), a leadingprovider of Internet broadcast security solutions, todayannounced version 4.0 of the WatchGuard LiveSecurity System(TM)which includes an entirely redesigned management interface, livelinks to WatchGuard's new online technical support site, and twonew options for enhanced security -- dial-up IPSec (InternetProtocol Security) VPN for remote users and e-mail filtering. Inaddition, WatchGuard has added two new types of securitybroadcast to the LiveSecurity Broadcast Service -- experteditorials and support flashes -- helping subscribers remainknowledgeable about new threats and enabling them to keep theirsystems current. The LiveSecurity Control Center, a newmanagement and monitoring console, delivers easier access to allof the WatchGuard security modules from one convenient screen andprovides live links to each subscriber's personal LiveSecurityarchive and to WatchGuard's new online technical support forum. The new features extend the functionality of the LiveSecuritySystem, delivering a comprehensive solution for safe e-businessthat includes: The WatchGuard LiveSecurity Broadcast Service,LiveSecurity Control Center, WatchGuard Security Suite and theWatchGuard Firebox Security Appliance. "The new LiveSecurity Control Center is tremendous," saidMichael Crawley, Manager of Information Technology at UnimedPharmaceuticals. "From that one point of reference I canmanipulate anything -- view or change my security policy, runreports and monitor usage. The new interface is very clean andthe integrated links to WatchGuard's online technical supportforum makes it easy to get online support without leaving theLiveSecurity Control Center interface." "WatchGuard expanded the LiveSecurity Broadcast Service bytransmitting more security intelligence directly to thecustomer's desktop," said Chris Christiansen, Program Director ofInternet Security at IDC Research in Framingham, Mass. "Thisenhancement ensures quicker access to technical support andsoftware updates from the new LiveSecurity Control Centermanagement screen." Easier Management with the LiveSecurity Control Center The LiveSecurity Control Center is a new, integratedmanagement and monitoring console that allows for quickinstallation and centralized management of the system from astandard Windows 95, 98 or NT workstation. From one location, managers can easily navigate through an intuitive, point-and-click interface to create security policies and remotely updatenew security software to the Firebox appliance. The LiveSecurityControl Center gives managers the flexibility to identify serviceand bandwidth usage with the Firebox monitors, view real-timeusage of web sites and generate historical reports. Liveintegrated links add a new dimension of interactivity to theLiveSecurity solution, providing instant access to WatchGuard'sonline technical support forum and giving subscribers a directlink to their personal LiveSecurity archive stored on a secureWatchGuard server. Providing More Expertise with Expanded LiveSecurity Content The LiveSecurity Broadcast Service plays an important role inkeeping the WatchGuard software current by proactivelytransmitting the information administrators need to remainknowledgeable about new threats and keep their systems current. In addition to threat responses, software updates and informationalerts version 4.0 now transmits expert editorials and supportflashes via LiveSecurity. These two new broadcasts deliversecurity-related feature articles written by third-party industryexperts and transmits answers to commonly asked questions aboutthe system. "After the LiveSecurity System is installed, we continue tosupport our customers through the LiveSecurity BroadcastService," said Christopher Slatt, CEO of WatchGuard. "Thisinnovative service gives subscribers a direct connection toWatchGuard's security experts and offers them a convenient way tokeep their system current and continue learning about importantsecurity-related information." As always, the LiveSecurity Service also enablesadministrators to instantly send software updates and threatresponses from their desktop to the Firebox appliance to keep thesecurity software current against new threats. In contrast, static host-based firewall systems do not include an automatedsubscription-based service such as LiveSecurity, and the softwareupdates require the resources of a highly paid security expert toensure proper installation and maintenance. Dial-Up IPSec VPN Option The WatchGuard Security Suite includes firewall, authentication and VPN security for branch offices and remoteusers. In addition to PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol),version 4.0 now gives administrators the option of using industrystandard IPSec VPN security for remote users. Advantages to theIPSec client include stronger encryption (168 bit in the US vs148 bit for PPTP), faster performance under certain conditionsand more robust functionality. For branch office security betweenmultiple Fireboxes, the system offers a choice betweenWatchGuard's Encryption Protocol and IPSec branch officesecurity. IPSec is a suite of protocols proposed by the InternetEngineering Task Force (IETF) for authenticating and encryptingdata. Control Junk E-mail with New SpamScreen Option To minimize the influx of unwanted e-mail, version 4.0provides a new SpamScreen(TM) option that screens incoming junkmail. For companies that are experiencing a large volume of junke-mail, SpamScreen helps prevent incremental costs, such as lostproductivity by employees who need to manage junk mail at theirdesktop and the cost involved with purchasing more bandwidth tosustain the transmission of spam mail. If left unmanaged, a burstof spam mail could potentially disrupt or crash a mail server.WatchGuard's new SpamScreen option addresses these concerns. Onceinstalled, it checks the source of each incoming e-mail messageagainst lists of questionable sources. SpamScreen also comparesthe e-mail with a list of signatures stored on the Firebox. Whena match is found, administrators can deny or allow the message,or tag the message with a warning to the user that the messagemay be suspect depending upon the preferences set by theadministrator. Innovative Security Appliance -- The Firebox The dynamic nature of the WatchGuard LiveSecurity System ismade possible through an updateable security appliance thatexecutes software sent from the administrator's remote managementworkstation receiving the LiveSecurity broadcasts. The Firebox isa standalone Internet security appliance that runs the securityfunctions of the LiveSecurity System. It plugs in behind therouter at the Internet connection of each office and implementssecurity policies and protection. Equipped with a security-hardened Linux-based operating system, it is dedicated to thespecialized task of Internet security. Its solid-statearchitecture removes the risk of hard drive failure and diskcrashes, and dual image flash memory enables fallback to thepreviously transmitted policy. Three independent networkinterfaces allow administrators to separate their protectedoffice network from the Internet while providing an optionalpublic network for hosting Web, e-mail or FTP servers. Pricing and Availability The WatchGuard LiveSecurity System version 4.0 is now shippingand available worldwide through a network of resellers. Suggestedlist price for the system is $4,990 in the U.S. The IPSec VPN andSpamScreen options are expected to be shipping on September 15,1999.
