US Airways Launches Charlotte-London Service

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (PROTEXT) - US Airways launches its servicebetween Charlotte and London this evening with a gala celebrationat Charlotte Douglas International Airport led by U.S. Sen. JesseHelms and with a full flight. Flight 94 is scheduled to depart at 8:25 p.m. from Gate D-2following a ribbon-cutting ceremony that will include Sen. Helms,Rep. Sue Myrick, Rep. Mel Watt, US Airways Executive VicePresident -- Corporate Affairs and General Counsel Lawrence M.Nagin and Charlotte officials. "This is a great day for Charlotte, a great day for NorthCarolina and a great day for consumers in both the United Statesand the U.K. US Airways will bring its superior service and much-needed competition to this important international aviationroute," Helms said. "Sen. Helms led the way in standing up for competition and forthe rights of U.S. consumers and businesses. We would not be heretoday but for his efforts. US Airways thanks him and the manyother governmental, civic and business leaders whose efforts madethis flight possible," Nagin said. Nagin said that US Airways looks forward to increasing itsinternational service from Charlotte. Passengers, employees and guests are expected to gather atGate D-2 at 7:00 this evening for a ceremonial ribbon cuttingthat includes a bagpipe honor guard and two special guards fromthe Tower of London who are in Charlotte to mark the occasion. With more than 470 jet and US Airways Express flights dailyservice almost 100 destinations non-stop, Charlotte is wellpositioned as an international gateway. US Airways enplaned more than 11 million passengers atCharlotte in 1998. US Airways' flights from Charlotte to London depart at 8:25p.m., arriving in London at 9:15 the next morning, with theexception of Tuesdays and Thursdays. On those days, the flightdeparts at 7:10 p.m., arriving at 8:00 a.m. the next day. Flightsfrom London depart at 11:15 a.m. seven days a week, arriving inCharlotte at 3:20 p.m. The Charlotte departure and arrival timesare closely tied to those of other US Airways flights to and fromFlorida, the Southeast and other destinations linked by theCharlotte hub. US Airways, US Airways Express, US Airways Shuttle andMetroJet serve 203 destinations worldwide, including 38 states inthe U.S., Bermuda, Cancun, Grand Cayman, Montego Bay, Nassau, SanJuan, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Croix, and the Canadiandestinations of Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Hamilton, and London,Ontario.
