Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd. Announces Beginning

Construction on the $51 Million Black Sea Fiber Optic CableSystem (BSFOCS) Morristown, N.J. (PROTEXT) - Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd.(TSSL) announced today that the contract had met all financialrequirements, and that construction had commenced on the BlackSea Fiber Optic Cable System (BSFOCS) valued at $51 milliondollars. This undersea cable system will utilize the mostadvanced technology and will result in providing significanteconomic advantages to the Black Sea countries and Caucasus.BSFOCS, has been designed to incorporate TSSL's advanced fiberoptic technology and the capability of upgrading via WaveDivision Multiplexing (WDM). The BSFOCS is scheduled for completion the third quarter of2000. This 1,300km, 2-fiber pair, undersea system will directlyconnect Bulgaria, Ukraine and Russia with 2.5 Gb/s of submarinecable transport capacity upgradable to at least 10 Gb/s. The BSFOCS use of WDM, optical amplification and SynchronousDigital Hierarchy (SDH) transmission in a collapsed ringconfiguration will provide traffic protection on the system. Thesystem uses state-of-the art WDM products designed by TSSLLaboratories located in Eatontown, New Jersey. This advancedtechnology is currently being utilized and deployed in variousother TSSL contracted projects around the world. As anindependent and fully integrated provider of undersea fiber opticnetworks, TSSL is uniquely positioned to supply, upgrade, andmaintain undersea systems similar to BSFOCS.
