New Audi V8 TDI Diesel Engine Stockholm, Sweden (PROTEXT) - Audi, World Technology LeadingCar Manufacturer, Launches State-of-the-Art Direct Injected V8Diesel Engine With an Engine Block Cast in SinterCast CompactedGraphite Iron SinterCast is pleased to report that the German carmanufacturer Audi, at the Vienna Motor Symposium in Austria, onMay 6, 1999, announced its new V8 TDI Diesel engine with theengine block designed in SinterCast CGI and produced by theGerman foundry Halberg Guss using the SinterCast Process ControlTechnology. The Audi V8 TDI forms a milestone in automotive design and inthe use of CGI for a high performance passenger car Dieselengine. In its announcement Audi further revealed: -- The engine has a displacement of 3.3 litres with a poweroutput of 165 kW (225 hp) at 4000 rpm. It is the first Dieselengine in Audi's range with a Common Rail injection system. -- With 4-valve technology, two adjustable turbine geometry(ATG) turbochargers and cooled Exhaust Gas Re-circulation (EGR),this engine fulfills the stringent exhaust emissions standardsaccording to EURO III. -- The engine has a bore and stroke of 78.3 x 86.4 mm and a90-degree cylinder bank angle. The increased material strength ofCompacted Graphite Iron allowed a 10% weight reduction of theengine block in comparison with Grey Iron. -- The V8 TDI sets new standards and, from a cubic capacityof only 3.3 litres, develops a maximum torque of 480 Newtonmetres, which is achieved at a mere 1800 rpm and remains at thislevel up to 3000 rpm. A peak value has been achieved with thespecific performance of almost 50 kW per litre of cubic capacity. Its optimum specific fuel consumption is only 205 grams per kWhour and is therefore extremely low for an eight-cylinderengine. -- With its TDI engines, Audi has revolutionised the world ofDiesel, and has proved that this engine concept can also competewith the petrol engine in terms of dynamism and driving enjoyment- with consumption which is approximately 30 percent lower andexemplary torque even at very low engine speeds. It thereforemanages to reconcile two seemingly irreconcilable opposites suchas enjoyment of sporty driving on the one hand and mobility andextensive range on the other hand. Mr. Joachim Braun, Managing Director of Halberg Guss GmbHcomments: "We are certainly pleased that Audi trusts in thedevelopment and casting competence of Halberg Guss and togetherwith SinterCast in partnership has followed new paths with asophisticated material" Mr. Bertil Hagman, President and CEO of the SinterCast Groupcomments: "The announcement that Audi has chosen SinterCast CGI for theengine block in its new V8 TDI engine is a milestone for CGI as anew engine material and for the SinterCast Process ControlTechnology. In the V8 TDI engine, the engine block material hascontributed to setting new standards for automotive specificperformance and fuel consumption. It is an important recognition of the SinterCast technologythat Audi, well known technology leader with the highestreputation for Diesel engine technology, has appointed thequality foundry Halberg Guss to produce the engine block usingthe SinterCast Process Control Technology to meet isexacting quality standards. SinterCast is pleased to be working with Halberg Guss, whosefoundry expertise in the production of the highest quality castiron has resulted in a unique production line installation of theSinterCast System 2000 to provide Europe's first high volumeproduction facility for automotive engine blocks in CGI. Thefacility meets the highest quality standards demanded by theindustry." Stockholm, May 1999 SinterCast AB (publ) Bertil Hagman SinterCast is a listed Swedish company, which developed andowns the SinterCast Process, a patented on-line Process ControlSystem which enables the production of high quality CompactedGraphite Iron (CGI) components on an industrial scale. CGI is anintermediate form of cast iron between Grey iron and Ductileiron, retaining much of the castability properties of Grey Ironbut with a material tensile and fatigue strength approximatelydouble that of Grey Iron. The stiffness of CGI is alsoincreased in the range of 30-40% when compared to Grey Iron. These enhanced properties can make it an ideal choice for anadvanced Diesel engine application where both increased strengthand reduced weight are required.ots Original Text Service: SinterCast Ltd.Internet: http://www.newsaktuell.deCONTACT: SinterCast AB, +46-8-660-7750, or fax: +46-8-661-7979,e-mail: info@sintercast.com, Internet: http://www.sintercast.com
