Geneva, Telecom '99, Booth 1130.2 (PROTEXT) - QUALCOMMIncorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of CodeDivision Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced that it is inviting a broad segment of thewireless industry to a demonstration of its High Data Rate (HDR)technology. Participants will experience high-speed, highlyefficient wireless Internet access capability in fixed and mobilecomputing environments. The demonstration will be conducted nextmonth in a multi-sector, multi-user environment to highlight HDRtechnology's advanced throughput, high efficiencies and handoffcapabilities. "It is fitting that our HDR trials coincide with the ten-yearanniversary of the first CDMA demonstrations when participantsexperienced the capabilities of multi-loop, power control, rakereceivers and soft handoff," said Dr. Irwin M. Jacobs, chairmanand CEO of QUALCOMM. "HDR offers an excellent complement tocurrent and future cellular and PCS standards and is capable ofmeeting the increasing demands for high-speed, high-capacitywireless Internet access." The demonstration will be conducted in conjunction with awireless symposium on Tuesday, November 9, 1999 in San Diego. Thesymposium, designed exclusively for wireless operators, manufacturers and partners, will feature presentations byindustry leaders and QUALCOMM executives with live demonstrationsof HDR in fixed and mobile environments. Following thedemonstration, extensive field tests in a multi-sector, multi-user environment will be conducted with the participation of keyoperators and partners. HDR supports e-mail, web browsing, e-commerce, telematics andmany other applications while offering end-users continuous, untethered access to the Internet and next generation dataservices. HDR's versatility allows the technology to be embeddedin handsets, laptop and handheld computers, and other fixed, portable and mobile devices. HDR provides a spectrally efficient 2.4 Mbps peak rate in astandard 1.25 MHz channel bandwidth. Optimized for packet dataservices, HDR incorporates a flexible architecture based onstandard Internet Protocols (IP). HDR's IP-based architectureallows flexible implementation of this wireless system in high-performance and cost-effective ways. As a complementary solutionto voice networks utilizing operator's existing cell sites, towers, antennas and network equipment, HDR technology allowsoperators to leverage their current infrastructure investment andcellular/Personal Communication Services (PCS) networks. It canalso be implemented as a stand-alone system using off-the-shelfIP backbone equipment. HDR is compatible with IS-95A, IS-95B andfuture cdma2000(TM) networks, enabling existing cdmaOne(TM) andcdma2000 service providers to obtain higher capacities andsuperior performance by optimizing voice and data spectrumseparately, serving both applications from the same network.
