Geneva, Telecom '99, Booth 1130.2 (PROTEXT) - Integrated CDMA Chipset and Software Solution UnderDevelopment to Meet Future Market Demand for Position LocationServices QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leaderof Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wirelesstechnology, today announced the development of Mobile StationModem (MSM(TM)) chipset and system software solutions that willfeature integrated support for wireless position locationtechnology. Called gpsOne(TM), the MSM solutions will provide theworld's most cost-effective solution for wireless positionlocation technology in a mobile handset for CDMA cellular andPersonal Communications Service (PCS) networks. "Integration of position location at the chip and systemsoftware level will provide the lowest cost, smallest form-factorand highest accuracy solution in the industry," said JohanLodenius, vice president of marketing and product management forQUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "This new position locationtechnology will enable an array of new applications for wirelessequipment manufacturers and service operators. It will bemandated for safety purposes as well as for value-addedcommercial applications using the handset position as anadditional parameter for Internet browsing, navigation andtracking services." QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies' innovative gpsOne solution uses ahybrid technique that combines information from GlobalPositioning Systems (GPS) satellites and CDMA cellular/PCSnetworks. By taking advantage of the measurements provided byCDMA base stations and/or GPS satellites, the future MSM chipsetand system software solutions will provide enhanced locationservices availability, accelerate the location determinationprocess and provide better accuracy for callers in emergencysituations. Leveraging the complementary nature of satellite and basestation accessibility, the gpsOne solution will improve theaccuracy, performance and availability of position services.Whether in rural, suburban or urban environments, theavailability of satellites and base stations will be optimized toeffectively determine position location. By supplementing the GPSmeasurements with CDMA measurements to provide seamlesspositioning coverage, the gpsOne solution will enhance theavailability of position location services in places such asinside buildings or tunnels where other position locationtechnologies have experienced difficulty maintaining performance. The gpsOne solution will meet the Federal CommunicationsCommission (FCC) mandate requiring wireless operators to providethe location of 911 calls (E911). The FCC has mandated that byMarch 2001, wireless service operators must support automaticlocation identification for all E911 calls. The high performanceof the gpsOne solution will enable better accuracy than requiredby the FCC and provide service opportunities beyond the locationof an emergency wireless phone call to include navigationinformation, weather forecast data, traffic information, commercial tracking services and location dependent Web browsing.Enabling a host of many new applications and services, theavailability of position location information will aid mobileusers in determining alternate routes to destinations, avoidingtraffic accidents or bad weather, choosing mid-pointdestinations, and providing pedestrian users with a wide varietyof information searching and e-commerce applications. QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies plans to complete trials of thegpsOne technology with major infrastructure vendors in the UnitedStates by the end of 1999.
