13.09.2007, 10:34
Burscheid (Germany) 13 September (PROTEXT/ots) - How might cockpits look inthe near future? The answer can be found in a prototype from JohnsonControls, one of the world’s leading suppliers of automotive interiorsystems, electronics and batteries. It will be presented at theInternational Motor Show 2007 to demonstrate current cockpit trends thatoffer drivers and passengers a high degree of usability. Innovative driverinformation systems and a new passenger display play a special role in thiscockpit prototype.
“Our concept utilizes a real cockpit to demonstrate the driver informationsystems of tomorrow. With these systems, we are providing cost-effectivesolutions with innovative technology, selected materials, and a harmonizedchoice of colors,” said Thomas Patzelt, Vice President and General ManagerElectronics Division Europe.
Ring pointer for better vision
A core element of the instrument cluster is an innovative ring pointer forindicating speed. The sophisticated mechanical design weighs less and ismore cost-effective than conventional solutions. It also eliminates thepointer’s central hub cover which is necessary in conventional designs. This allows the center area of the speedometer to be used to display otherdriver aids without any visual obstruction.
In terms of design freedom, the central information display is setting newstandards. Due to its frameless integration, new surface forms can be usedin the display area for the first time. The typical right-angled displayarea is scattered with lateral placed LED-backlighted symbols and offerscompletely new possibilities in interior design.
Individual information for the passenger
The passenger also is provided with individual information in this car ofthe near future. Johnson Controls is setting the trend in passengerdisplays by integrating a high-resolution color TFT display. The additionalLED-backlighted symbols at the sides makes the display appear large andgives it a creative edge. The concept is available for the middle segmentup to the luxury segment.
“We have integrated these innovations into a cockpit to allow our customersto get a better idea of the product in its actual environ-ment,” saidThomas Patzelt. However, all product solutions are also availableseparately.”
