Fraport AG Convinced of Long-term Growth in the Air Cargo Industry

10.10.2001, 19:31

FRANKFURT/MAIN (ots/PROTEXT) - According to Fraport AGFrankfurt Airport Services Worldwide - owner and manager ofFrankfurt Airport (FRA) - the global air cargo industry has todeal with a temporary crisis but not structural change. Duringthe opening ceremony of the 12th International Frankfurt AirFreight Days conference tonight at the Frankfurt Airport SheratonHotel, Fraport AG's Executive Board Chairman Wilhelm Bender saidthat this strong confidence is based on past experience gainedfrom such events as the oil crisis, the Gulf War and the Asianeconomic crisis. Speaking to 200 key national and international decision makersin the cargo industry, Bender pointed out that Frankfurt Airporthas registered an average annual growth of 4.6 percent since1980. During this period, FRA's cargo volume increased from 0.6million to 1.6 million metric tons per year. "Other industrieswould be envious." Bender stated that Fraport AG is responding to the temporarydecline in FRA's airfreight traffic by adjusting the allocationof staff ("still no operations-related layoffs") and by re-examining all expense items, investments and capitalexpenditures. Fraport's CEO added that the past has taught usthat air cargo is a growth market "par excellence". But air cargois also a very sensitive market that reacts earlier than otherbranches to the cyclical fluctuations of the world economy. "Weexpect that, within a manageable time frame, we will be able tobuild on the industry's normal growth." Bender said that Frankfurt Airport experienced a negative 4.6-percent growth rate in air cargo for the first three quarters of2001. However, he warned not to let short-term trends block theview on long-term developments. It is intolerable "to leave theshaping of our world to terrorists". Also, the latest traffic development does not provide anyreasons to renew discussions on the necessity of airportexpansion, said Bender. "We will expand our capacities accordingto demand... The approval procedures are underway and we areproceeding entirely on schedule." ots Original Text Service:Fraport AG Internet: http://www.presseportal.de For MoreInformation, Please Contact: Fraport AG Frankfurt AirportServices Worldwide Attn: Robert A. The ČTK has been offering its clients extra services for free since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine. On Thursday, February 24, it also made its news service available free of charge to the Ukrainian national news agency Ukrinform. In the first five days of the conflict, from Febraury 24 to 28, the ČTK published more than 1,500 news items (including flashes and versions), more than 700 headlines and 60 profiles with the keyword Ukraine.

"We have made online transmission available to media clients, delivering them the fastest breaking news, which are made from the released headlines. At present, it runs on about 40 web portals in the Czech Republic and Slovakia," said Jan Vavrušák, the ČTK’s deputy sales director.

"We have also offered clients the possibility of sending the fastest news on Ukraine, i.e. the headlines I have mentioned, directly to their emails. This service is also in great demand among our subscribers. In addition to the media, deputies and senators of the Parliament of the Czech Republic have shown interest in it," Vavrušák added. The Foreign Ministry, too, has had the fastest news service sent via text messages to a wide range of its senior staff since the outbreak of war in Ukraine.

Clemens Pig, the President of the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA), thanked European news agencies that provided free coverage to Ukraine's national news agency Ukrinform on Twitter

The ČTK creates the news coverage on Ukraine primarily from sources such as other news agencies and reliable local sources. The ČTK does not have its own correspondent directly at the place of the conflict. However, its correspondent and an external photojournalist were at the Ukrainian-Slovak border over the weekend, and on Tuesday, a ČTK correspondent and a photojournalist went to the Ukrainian-Polish border.

Most of the news on Ukraine is issued at the ČTK’s foreign desk and a large part also at the domestic desk, but the impacts of the conflict are also covered in detail at the economic and sports desks.
