Irving, Texas (PROTEXT) - Exxon Corporation (NYSE: XON) todayannounced that it has received the prestigious DistinguishedAchievement Award from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists(SEG) for the invention and development of 3-D seismicexploration. Dan Mendell, president of Exxon Production ResearchCompany, accepted the award at the SEG annual meeting in Houston. The SEG, an international professional society representing15,000 geophysicists in 50 countries, has presented theDistinguished Achievement Award only 10 times in its 69-yearhistory. Exxon is the first oil company to receive the award. The SEG recognized 3-D seismic exploration as the mostimportant geophysical innovation in the past 30 years. Three-Dseismic technology has revolutionized industry's search for oiland gas by providing detailed 3-D images of geologic formationsbeneath the earth's surface. The technology has greatly increaseddrilling success during all phases of oil and gas exploration anddevelopment. Exxon Production Research began work on a 3-D seismic systemin 1963. After extensive research and development, the 3-Dseismic method was presented by Exxon at the 1970 SEG annualmeeting and published in the SEG journal Geophysics in June 1972.Today, many exploration and production projects rely upon 3-Dseismic exploration technology to assess prospects and optimallyposition wells. Exxon is one of a few oil companies to conduct majorexploration and production research activities today. Thecompany's current seismic processing research is focused on high-end methods, an area in which it pioneered the use of massivelyparallel computers for processing 3-D seismic data. Exxonroutinely images oil and gas prospects beneath salt formationsand in areas with complex geological structures using itsproprietary 3-D prestack depth migration seismic processingsoftware. ots Original Text Service: Exxon Corporation Internet:http://www.newsaktuell.de Contact: Jill Johnson of ExxonCorporation (USA) 972-444-1170 Web site: http://www.exxon.com
