Exxon and Mobil Confirm European Commission Second Phase

Merger Inquiry IRVING, Texas and FAIRFAX, Va. (PROTEXT) - Exxon Corporation(NYSE: XON) and Mobil Corporation (NYSE: MOB) confirmed that theywere formally advised on June 9 that, as previously indicated,the European Commission has decided to open a second phaseinquiry regarding the proposed Exxon Mobil merger. Second phase inquiries are not unusual in EC reviews of suchcomplex merger agreements, according to Exxon and Mobil. Thecompanies said such an inquiry had been anticipated. Exxon andMobil filed the formal pre-merger notification with the EuropeanCommission on May 3. The companies said that it is unrealistic toexpect the Commission to assess this merger and digest the largeamount of information provided by Exxon and Mobil in a 30-dayperiod. Under the EC's regulatory framework, the companies continue tobelieve that the second phase inquiry should be completed aroundthe end of the third quarter.
