Homer City Generating Station Rosemead, Calif. (ots-PRNewswire) - Edison Internationalannounced today that its has closed financing and completed itsacquisition of the 1,884-megawatt Homer City Generating Station.Located in western Pennsylvania, Homer City is one of the largestand lowest-cost sources of electricity in the Middle Atlanticstates. In addition to the $1.8 billion acquisition price, the companyplans to invest more than $200 million to upgrade pollutioncontrols at the coal-fired Homer City plant, adding a scrubber onone unit and selective catalytic controls on all three of theplant's units. John E. Bryson, chairman and chief executive officer of EdisonInternational, said, "The Homer City facility will provide uswith a strong base in the competitive markets now forming in theNortheast. We expect that the acquisition will add to theearnings of Edison Mission Energy and Edison Internationalbeginning in 1999 and that we will operate Homer City profitablyfar into the future." Edward R. Muller, president and chief executive officer ofEdison Mission Energy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of EdisonInternational, which will own and operate the plant, added,"Strong environmental performance is one of our key objectives,and after the voluntary investment we are making in pollutioncontrols, Homer City will have the lowest nitrogen oxide emissionrate of any large coal plant in the eastern United States." Previously owned jointly by subsidiaries of GPU, Inc. and NewYork State Electric & Gas Corporation, Homer City is the onlymajor coal-fired facility in the Middle Atlantic region withrights to direct high voltage access to both the New York PowerPool and the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Power Pool. Theplant is located approximately 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania.
