Callaway Golf and Taiwan Government Cooperate in Raids

Against Golf Club Counterfeiters Carlsbad, Calif. (ots-PRNewswire) - Callaway Golf Company(NYSE: ELY), announced today that it has cooperated withgovernment authorities in carrying out three raids against golfclub counterfeiters in Taiwan. The raids were targeted againstcounterfeit Callaway Golf products manufactured in Taiwan andexported to the U.S. and other foreign markets. The successfulactions in Taiwan come in the wake of "Project Teed Off," a U.S.Customs "sting" executed in February 1999 that resulted in thearrest of twelve persons, among them several Taiwanese citizens. The raids in Taiwan were carried out on April 14th byofficials of the Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Justice,which is responsible for the enforcement of intellectual propertylaws in Taiwan. Raided were Liang Sheng Golf, Blue WhaleEnterprises, Ltd., and Ta Sheng Industries. The three raidedbusinesses were all located in Fengyuan City, a suburb of thecapital city, Taipei. Officials arrested two persons -- ChangChu-Ping and Liu Tai-Chi -- and seized approximately a thousandcounterfeit "Callaway Golf" golf club components, includingalmost a hundred fully assembled counterfeit irons and metalwoods. Steven C. McCracken, Executive Vice President and Chief LegalOfficer of Callaway Golf, expressed his satisfaction with theactions of Taiwanese authorities.
