24.08.1999, 07:19

For Data and Voice Over Internet Norwood, Mass., USA (PROTEXT) - ADI Builds on LeadershipPosition in VoIP Processor Market and Achieves 24 Ports on aSingle Chip Analog Devices (NYSE: ADI), today announced a chip thatenables a new level of communications capacity for networking andremote access equipment. The new ADSP-21mod980 contains 24 ports, the equivalent of a T1 communications line, achieving the highestlevel of density in the industry with a single integratedcircuit. The new high- density Internet access solution enablesthe convergence of voice and data networks through a uniqueability to configure any port for any protocol. Measuringapproximately 1.9 square inches, the ADSP-21mod980 consumes thelowest power and space per port and is based on a field-provenarchitecture that is programmable and flexible. "Analog Devices' goal is to provide future-proof Internetaccess solutions that support the growing number of Internetsubscribers, protocols and connection rates," said Robert Fine,Remote Access Server Product Line Manager. "The ADSP-21mod980delivers a proven, flexible, and cost-effective approach tosupport the convergence of both voice and data on the samenetwork." "As the network moves toward voice and data convergence, devices that support multi-service protocols are key tocompetitive access," said RHK analyst, Claude Romans, Director ofLoop Access. "To ensure profitable and cost-efficient access, service providers need network access systems that supportmultiple protocols from a single-point access infrastructure.Multi- service access devices with high density, as well as lowcost and power, will deliver the features required by serviceproviders and corporations to build and expand their networkaccess capabilities." The new network access solution, the ADSP-21mod980, offersindustry- leading flexibility, density, power consumption andoperational savings for Internet service providers (ISPs). Thedevice enables ISPs to become both a data and Internet telephonyservice provider (ITSP), expanding access offerings whilereducing total cost of operation through reductions inadministration, facilities, equipment and WAN services. The ADSP-21mod980 features a universal software package forV.90, K56Flex, V.34, ISDN, Fax (FoIP) and Voice over IP (VoIP)protocols. Service providers are able to make significant costsavings by the flexibility and increased load handlingcapabilities of ADI's any-protocol-on-any-port device. Each ofthe 24 ports on the ADSP-21mod980 is able to independentlyprocess different standards. For example, the chip can handle aV.90 modem on one port, G.729A VoIP on another, and/or a fax callon a third. In addition, the software architecture enables real-time call statistics and diagnostics tools for improved qualityof service levels. The VoIP software package also includessupport for voice, fax and data call discrimination, fax overnetwork, speech activity and host software interface. The ADSP21mod980 consumes only 60 mW per port, which, at 3.3V, represents less than one third the amount of power than theclosest competitor. The solution processes 600 millioninstruction per second (MIPS) and integrates 2 megbits of SRAM,in a 35 x 35 mm 352-lead BGA package. ADI's Internet Gateway Processor Solutions The ADSP-21mod980 is the company's third single-chip InternetGateway Processor, or digital modem. Since the introduction ofthe ADSP-21mod870 in 1997, ADI has successfully doubled densityevery nine months and achieved the goal of providing industry-leading density and support for evolving Internet protocols anddata types. ADI's family of Internet Gateway Processors areembedded 16-bit DSPs and software solutions that have enabled thedevelopment of new Internet access products including high-density remote access servers and remote access concentrators, inaddition to modem test equipment, VoIP systems and multi-servicegateways. The ADSP-21mod-Series has currently been adopted anddeployed by a number of industry leaders, including LucentInterNetworking Systems, Brooktrout, Ericsson, MapletreeNetworks, Netaccess and Digi International. For additionalinformation see ADI press releases dated March 17, and April 14,1999 at http://www.content.analog.com/pressrelease. Pricing & Availability The ADSP-21mod980 is packaged in a 352-lead PBGA (plastic ballgrid array) measuring 35 mm x 35 mm and is priced at $265 each inquantities of 1,000 units. This price includes all requiredhardware and software. Prices may vary depending on softwareconfigurations. Samples of the ADSP-21mod980 are available today, with full production slated for the fourth quarter of 1999.
