British Open Winner Uses Callaway Golf(R) Metal Woods
20.07.1999, 19:31
And Odyssey(R) TriForce(TM) Putter in Historic Comeback Victory
Carlsbad, Calif. (PROTEXT) - Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY)
announced today that its Callaway Golf(R) and Odyssey Golf(R)
brands each had a hand in winning one of the most spectacular
British Opens in the storied history of the championship. The
winner relied on the power and accuracy of his Callaway Golf(R)
titanium driver and Big Bertha(R) Steelhead(TM) 3-wood along with
the precision of his Odyssey(R) TriForce(TM) Putter to overcome a
10-stroke deficit in the final round.
The 30-year-old Scottish winner used his Odyssey TriForce
Putter to sink birdie putts on the final two playoff holes to
clinch the historic victory. His 10-foot birdie putt on the third
playoff hole gave him a one-stroke lead heading into the final
hole of the playoff. On that final hole, he struck a perfect
drive that helped set up the three-foot birdie putt on the 18th
green that completed his dramatic comeback.
The winner's Big Bertha Steelhead 3-wood was one of 72
Callaway Golf fairway woods (all models) put in play at the
British Open, according to Sports Marketing Survey, Ltd. The
nearest competitor had 25 fairway woods in play at the
championship.
This marks the first major championship victory for Odyssey
Golf's new TriForce line of putters, which have now won nine
times around the world.
Meanwhile, Callaway Golf Staff Professional Bruce Fleisher
continued his remarkable run on the Senior PGA Tour. Fleisher
made five final-round birdies and finished tied for second at the
Ameritech Senior Open, one stroke behind the winner. Fleisher
used 13 Callaway Golf clubs, including a Callaway Golf titanium
driver, Big Bertha Steelhead 4-wood and 5-wood, and Big Bertha X-
12(R) Irons and Wedges. Fleisher also used an Odyssey Dual
Force(R) Rossie(R) 2 Putter.
Fleisher now has five second-place finishes to go with his
four senior victories this year. The Senior PGA Tour rookie is
atop the money list with $1,470,325 in winnings and also leads
the senior tour in the birdie average, scoring average, par
breakers and all-around statistical rankings.
