Montgomerie Sweep to Victories on Four Tours
CARLSBAD, Calif. (ots-PRNewswire) - In an unprecedented
achievement for Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY), four of the company's
staff professionals were victorious on major professional tours
on the same weekend. Colin Montgomerie began the torrid Callaway
run with a PGA European Tour victory at Loch Lomond in Scotland
on Saturday. On Sunday, Dave Eichelberger won the U.S. Senior
Open at Des Moines Golf and Country Club, while Carlos Franco
took the Greater Milwaukee Open on the PGA Tour and Annika
Sorenstam won on the third hole of a sudden death playoff at the
Michelob Light Classic on the LPGA Tour.
Each of the four champions used Callaway's new Great Big
Bertha(R) Hawk Eye(R) Titanium Driver in their victories --
producing a "Brand Slam" for Callaway Golf's latest breakthrough
product -- and each also used Big Bertha(R) X-12(R) Irons. To
the best of the Company's knowledge, this is the first time in
history that the same brand of driver and irons has been used by
the winners of four such prestigious tournaments in a single
week.
"I hit the ball better than I have all year," said
Montgomerie, who used 11 Callaway Golf(R) clubs -- a Great Big
Bertha Hawk Eye Titanium Driver, a Big Bertha Steelhead(TM) 3-
wood and Big Bertha X-12 Irons -- in shooting a 16-under-par
total of 268. He hit 14 of 14 fairways and in the final round,
birdieing seven of the first 10 holes en route to a 64. "This
gives me a great deal of confidence. I'm very much looking
forward to the Open Championship," added Montgomerie, a native
born Scot whose 20th career European victory was his first in
Scotland.
Eichelberger's stirring victory was his first in a USGA event.
He used 11 Callaway clubs, including a Great Big Bertha Hawk Eye
Titanium Driver, Callaway Golf fairway woods and Big Bertha X-12
Irons to post a winning total of 7-under-par 281. "I hit some
great shots this week," said Eichelberger, who called his 257-
yard second shot with his Callaway 3-wood to the 15th hole "the
best 3-wood shot I've hit in my life." The soaring shot hit the
green and Eichelberger then two-putted for birdie to propel him
to victory in the most prestigious title in senior golf.
For Sorenstam, the return to the winner's circle after a nine-
month absence was highlighted by exceptional ball-striking. In
her final round of 2-under-par 70, Sorenstam played the final 14
holes in 4-under par, rallying from four strokes behind to catch
Tina Barrett in regulation play. She then birdied the third
playoff hole to win her third straight Michelob Light Classic
title.
Sorenstam used 10 Callaway clubs, including a Great Big Bertha
Hawk Eye Titanium Driver, Big Bertha Steelhead 3-wood and 7-wood
and Big Bertha X-12 Irons.
Franco's second PGA Tour victory of the season was another
ball-striking clinic. His 72-hole total of 20-under par was a
tournament record, and the victory pushed his 1999 earnings to
$1.38 million. Franco, 34, used 12 Callaway clubs, including a
Great Big Bertha Hawk Eye Titanium Driver, a Big Bertha Steelhead
2-wood and Big Bertha X-12 irons.
"I had a lot of confidence this week," said Franco, who is the
first rookie in PGA Tour history to win more than $1 million in a
season. "There was no nervousness."
A Great Big Bertha Hawk Eye Titanium Driver was also used to
record a high finish on the NIKE Tour this past weekend, as the
third-place finisher at the NIKE Greensboro Open used a Hawk Eye
Driver and a Callaway Golf fairway wood.
