ČTK photojournalists won first prizes in two categories of the Czech Press Photo (CPP) competition. Roman Vondrouš with the series „The Prime Minister in the White House“ won in the category „People being talked about“. Kateřina Šulová was awarded the first prize in the Portrait category for her photo of the opera singer Soňa Červená.

The Photograph of the year and the winner of the 25th year of the competition was a picture of the national flag flying over the heads of thousands of protestors on the Letná Plain by Lukáš Biba from Economia.

Roman Vondrouš entered the competition with a series of nine photos he took during a three-day trip of PM Andrej Babiš in the United States, where the Czech Prime Minister met with US President Donald Trump at the White House. It was a great photographic challenge and experience for Vondrous. “You can't prepare well enough for this. Everything was different from what I had planned,” he said. Vondrouš also won the 2013 World Press Photo award in the Sport category for a series from Velká Pardubická steeplechase and is multiple holder of CPP in various categories.

As the best portrait of this year, the jury judged the picture of the mezzo-soprano Soňa Červena taken by Kateřina Šulová during an interview with ČTK. “Mrs. Červená is consummate professional, she knew exactly what the photographer needed, and how and where to look. In about a minute, five and six pictures were made and I sent one of them to the competition,” Šulová said.

CTK photo reporters score regularly in the CPP competition, but the victory in two categories of one year is unique. “First of all, I would like to congratulate Katka and Roman and also thank them for the excellent representation of ČTK. Both prove that extraordinary photographs can be created even in such a demanding discipline as agency photography,” Radka Marková, editor-in-chief of ČTK news, said. “In the history of the competition, our photographers have a total of 27 victories. In addition to today's winners, it was Michal Doležal, Michal Kamaryt or David Taneček among others,”added ČTK CEO Jiří Majstr.

The international jury, which collected almost four thousand entries from 270 authors, awarded prizes in eight photo categories and three video sections. ČTK awards its own prize as part of the CPP, which is accompanied by scholarship for young photographers up to 26 years of age. This year, Denisa Albani won with the series One Hundred Years for Defense of the State.
