Callaway Golf Announces Resignation of Frederick R. Port As Head of International Sales
30.11.1999, 16:00
CARLSBAD, Calif. (PROTEXT) - Callaway Golf Company (NYSE: ELY)
today announced the resignation of Frederick R. Port from its
board of directors immediately, and as president of Callaway
Golf's international sales, effective December 31, 1999. Mr. Port
joined the Company in September of 1995, and had served as the
head of the Company's international sales division for the last
three years.
Ely Callaway, Chairman and CEO stated, "When we named Fred as
President of Callaway Golf International more than three years
ago, we asked him to develop and execute a plan to increase
Callaway Golf's sales overseas and to integrate foreign
distribution where appropriate. He accomplished both tasks.
International sales have increased over the past three years,
despite the economic crisis in Asia. As of January 1, 2000,
Callaway will own 85 percent of its international distribution,
compared with 15 percent three years ago.
"We appreciate the fact that Fred has decided that he will
remain with the Company during the transitional period. He played
an important role in the planning and implementing of the
restructuring program that helped the Company return to
profitability in 1999. Fred is a good friend, and we will miss
his guidance and good counsel. We know that he will always be an
excellent ambassador for Callaway Golf. We recognize that Fred
believes the time has come for him to seek new challenges outside
Callaway Golf and we are sure he will succeed in his new
endeavors."
Mr. Callaway announced that Jim Chenevey, Vice President of
International Sales, will be the interim head of international
sales for Callaway Golf while a search is underway for a
permanent successor to Mr. Port. Mr. Chenevey will be among those
considered.
"While this has been in discussion for some time, my decision
to leave Callaway Golf is the most difficult decision I have had
to make," said Mr. Port. "I love this company and I am proud of
the contributions I made to Callaway Golf during the more than
three years I was in charge of international sales. Now, after
spending between 20 to 30 weeks a year on the road, I am looking
forward to spending more time with my family -- especially with
our new grandchild, who is due to arrive at the end of the year.
Between now and then, I will be visiting each Callaway Golf
foreign subsidiary to personally thank my many friends and
associates and to help with the smooth transition to new
leadership."
