Callaway Golf Staff Pro Michael Campbell Leads International Two-Win Weekend For Hawk Eye(R) Drivers
16.11.1999, 11:25
CARLSBAD, Calif. (PROTEXT) - In a spectacular regular season
wrap-up for Callaway Golf Company (NYSE: ELY), two touring
professionals on two different continents used the same model
driver -- the Great Big Bertha(R) Hawk Eye Titanium Driver -- to
win on their respective tours.
Callaway Golf Staff Professional Michael Campbell fought off
challenges from a leaderboard laden with international stars to
win the PGA European Tour's Johnnie Walker Classic in Taiwan and
earn his first victory since 1995. In recording the victory,
Campbell managed to do what no other golfer has done since the
NEC Invitational in late August -- win an event that had Tiger
Woods in the field.
Meanwhile, the winner of the LPGA's PageNet Tour Championship
in Las Vegas used her Great Big Bertha Hawk Eye Titanium driver -
- and a brand new set of Hawk Eye Tungsten Injected(TM) Titanium
Irons -- to earn a dramatic playoff win over Karrie Webb and
Laura Davies on Sunday. She opened the tournament with back to
back rounds of 66 and her victory was sealed by a birdie putt set
up by a sensational shot with her Hawk Eye 8-iron to within five
feet of the cup.
"I just started playing with the Hawk Eye," the champion, who
put the new Hawk Eye Irons in her bag for the first time the day
before the tournament began, told a local newspaper. "I just find
good distance with them. They seem to help me play better;
they're working."
The winner earned three LPGA Tour titles this year, relying on
Callaway Golf woods and irons in each. At the Tour Championship,
she used 12 Callaway Golf clubs, including a Hawk Eye Titanium
Driver and Big Bertha(R) Steelhead(TM) 3-wood and 5-wood in
addition to her Hawk Eye Irons. Callaway Golf Staff Professional
Bruce Fleisher, who made the semifinals of this past weekend's
Senior Match Play Challenge, has already won two events using the
new Hawk Eye Irons.
Campbell shot a 2-under-par 70 in the final round, including a
key birdie on No. 15 to take a lead he did not relinquish. The
30-year-old New Zealander earned $215,328 for the victory, his
best showing since he won the Alfred Dunhill Masters in Jakarta.
"This is a wonderful accomplishment," said Campbell, who
carried 11 Callaway Golf clubs including a Great Big Bertha Hawk
Eye Titanium Driver, Big Bertha Steelhead 3-wood and Big Bertha
X-12(R) Irons. Campbell also used an Odyssey(R) Putter. "I am
very pleased to be back striking the ball well, off the tee and
from the fairway. It's a great feeling to be back."
