Callaway Golf Staff Professionals Bruce Fleisher and Colin Montgomerie Wrap Up Tour Money Titles
9.11.1999, 12:12
Carlsbad, Calif. (PROTEXT) - Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff
Professionals Bruce Fleisher and Colin Montgomerie capped what
has been a dream season for both golfers by winning their
respective 1999 tour money titles over the weekend. Fleisher's
second-place finish at the season-ending Ingersoll-Rand Senior
Tour Championship clinched the Senior PGA Tour money title, while
Montgomerie's solid play at the American Express Stroke Play
Championship earned him a record seventh consecutive PGA European
Tour Order of Merit title.
Fleisher finished his rookie season on the Senior PGA Tour
with $2,515,705 in earnings and a record tying seven victories.
He also led the tour in scoring average (69.24), putting and top-
10 finishes (18). Fleisher is the odds-on favorite to win rookie
of the year and player of the year honors.
"This year has been an incredible ride," said Fleisher, 51.
"I'm so thankful for having this opportunity. I will always be
able to say that 1999 was my year. Nobody can take it away."
At the Senior Tour Championship, Fleisher continued his
phenomenal play with Callaway Golf's new Hawk Eye(R) Tungsten
Injected(TM) Titanium Irons. Since putting the Hawk Eye Irons and
Wedges in his bag at the Kroger Senior Classic, played Sept. 24-
26, Fleisher has won twice and posted a 67.91 stroke average. At
the Senior Tour Championship, Fleisher also carried a Callaway
Golf titanium driver and Big Bertha(R) Steelhead(TM) 4-wood and
5-wood. He also used an Odyssey Dual Force(R) 664 Putter. In each
of this year's seven victories -- and seven second-place finishes
-- Fleisher has used 13 Callaway Golf clubs.
Meanwhile, Montgomerie used 11 Callaway Golf clubs at
Valderrama, including a Great Big Bertha(R) Hawk Eye Titanium
Driver, Big Bertha Steelhead 3-wood and Big Bertha X-12(R) Irons.
Montgomerie enjoyed his finest season to date on the PGA European
Tour, winning six times and leading the tour in scoring average
(69.59) and greens hit in regulation (79.3). No other golfer has
ever won the European Order of Merit seven times in a career,
much less seven years in a row.
"I can't quite believe it," said Montgomerie, 36. "It's
getting tougher, because the standard behind me is improving all
the time. Whether it's going to happen eight times or not, I'll
be trying, as I always have. My ambition has never dwindled."
