Callaway Staff Pros Montgomerie and Graham Charge to Victories on European Tour and Senior Tour
19.10.1999, 11:00
CARLSBAD, Calif. (PROTEXT) - Colin Montgomerie and David
Graham, Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff Professionals, both were
victorious over this past weekend. Montgomerie cruised to a PGA
European Tour record- tying sixth win of the season with his 3
and 2 victory over Mark O'Meara at the Cisco World Match Play
Championship at Wentworth, England. Graham fired a closing round
65 for a four-stroke victory over Larry Mowry in the Raley's Gold
Rush at Serrano Country Club in El Dorado Hills, Calif.
Montgomerie used 11 Callaway Golf clubs in this, his 23rd
career PGA European Tour victory, including a Great Big Bertha(R)
Hawk Eye(R) Titanium Driver, Big Bertha(R) Steelhead(TM) 3-wood
and Big Bertha X-12(R) Irons. Playing excellent golf despite a
severe toothache, Montgomerie opened up a 5-hole lead in the
afternoon portion of the match and then closed-out his fellow
competitor on the 34th hole.
"It's been a wonderful ball-striking year for me," said
Montgomerie, who is virtually assured of winning a record-
breaking seventh consecutive Volvo Order of Merit money title in
Europe. "Driving, iron play -- right through the bag -- it's been
extremely gratifying."
Graham used 13 Callaway Golf clubs in this, his fifth Senior
PGA Tour victory, including a Callaway Titanium Driver, Callaway
Steelhead 4-wood and Callaway X-12 Irons and pitching wedges. He
began the tournament on Friday with a course record-tying 63 and
closed strongly, birdieing five of the first nine holes to charge
into the lead.
"I got off to a good start and just kept it going," said
Graham, who finished with a 17-under-par total of 199, a
tournament record for the 54-hole event. "I've got a lot of
confidence in my iron play, and that's a function of how well I'm
driving the ball."
In other positive news from the pro tours, the winner of the
Las Vegas Invitational used a Callaway Titanium Driver and the
two pros that tied for second place in the LPGA's AFLAC
Tournament of Champions both used Callaway Steelhead fairway
woods. In addition, the winner of the AFLAC Tournament of
Champions used an Odyssey(R) Dual Force(R) 330 putter, the
runner-up in the Las Vegas Invitational used an Odyssey DF 330
Mallet putter and one of the runner-up finishers at the AFLAC
Tournament of Champions used an Odyssey TriForce(TM) 2 putter.
