Integrated CDMA Chipset and Software Solution Under
Development to Meet Future Market Demand for Position Location
Services
QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader
of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless
technology, today announced the development of Mobile Station
Modem (MSM(TM)) chipset and system software solutions that will
feature integrated support for wireless position location
technology. Called gpsOne(TM), the MSM solutions will provide the
world's most cost-effective solution for wireless position
location technology in a mobile handset for CDMA cellular and
Personal Communications Service (PCS) networks.
"Integration of position location at the chip and system
software level will provide the lowest cost, smallest form-factor
and highest accuracy solution in the industry," said Johan
Lodenius, vice president of marketing and product management for
QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "This new position location
technology will enable an array of new applications for wireless
equipment manufacturers and service operators. It will be
mandated for safety purposes as well as for value-added
commercial applications using the handset position as an
additional parameter for Internet browsing, navigation and
tracking services."
QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies' innovative gpsOne solution uses a
hybrid technique that combines information from Global
Positioning Systems (GPS) satellites and CDMA cellular/PCS
networks. By taking advantage of the measurements provided by
CDMA base stations and/or GPS satellites, the future MSM chipset
and system software solutions will provide enhanced location
services availability, accelerate the location determination
process and provide better accuracy for callers in emergency
situations.
Leveraging the complementary nature of satellite and base
station accessibility, the gpsOne solution will improve the
accuracy, performance and availability of position services.
Whether in rural, suburban or urban environments, the
availability of satellites and base stations will be optimized to
effectively determine position location. By supplementing the GPS
measurements with CDMA measurements to provide seamless
positioning coverage, the gpsOne solution will enhance the
availability of position location services in places such as
inside buildings or tunnels where other position location
technologies have experienced difficulty maintaining performance.
The gpsOne solution will meet the Federal Communications
Commission (FCC) mandate requiring wireless operators to provide
the location of 911 calls (E911). The FCC has mandated that by
March 2001, wireless service operators must support automatic
location identification for all E911 calls. The high performance
of the gpsOne solution will enable better accuracy than required
by the FCC and provide service opportunities beyond the location
of an emergency wireless phone call to include navigation
information, weather forecast data, traffic information,
commercial tracking services and location dependent Web browsing.
Enabling a host of many new applications and services, the
availability of position location information will aid mobile
users in determining alternate routes to destinations, avoiding
traffic accidents or bad weather, choosing mid-point
destinations, and providing pedestrian users with a wide variety
of information searching and e-commerce applications.
QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies plans to complete trials of the
gpsOne technology with major infrastructure vendors in the United
States by the end of 1999.
