8.10.1999, 19:05
London, England (PROTEXT) - Motorola Inc., Mobile
Communications International, and Phone.com Inc. Team To Provide
Latest Innovations in WAP to Telecom 99 Delegates
Motorola Inc. and Phone.com, Inc. (Nasdaq: PHCM) together with
Mobile Communications International (MCI), have joined forces to
provide Telecom'99 delegates live news, email and Internet
information access using WAP-enabled Motorola Timeport(TM) P7389
phones. The programme has been designed to increase awareness of
the benefits of WAP technology and services to senior telecom
industry executives from across the world attending the
Telecom'99 show in Geneva, Switzerland, October 10-17, 1999.
Daily industry news and breaking bulletins from MCI's
dedicated Telecom 99 Web site -- http://www.wirelessGeneva.com --
will be sent directly to the Motorola handsets. Delegates will be
able to send and receive email, as well as access Internet
information from various WAP-enabled web sites. Telecom 99 is to
be the first of many events at which MCI will offer specialised
news information to wireless executives who need up-to-date
information while on the move.
The service will be delivered on Motorola Timeport P7389
handsets equipped with Phone.com's WAP 1.1 compliant UP.Browser.
Phone.com will provide and operate the UP.Link(TM) Server Suite,
its full WAP 1.1 server offering. MCI will provide content
focussed on the needs of the busy wireless industry executives
attending Telecom 99.
"Telecom 99 is giving us a tremendous opportunity to show
delegates what the very near future will look and feel like. At
Motorola, we are harnessing the power of the wireless Internet to
give consumers fast, convenient access to the information, the
people and places they want to connect with, when and where they
want to do it," said Frank Lloyd, Senior Vice President and
General Manager, Personal Communications Sector, EMEA.
"This incentive was designed to clearly demonstrate some of
the benefits of WAP that are real and available now from Motorola
and Phone.com," said Malcolm Bird, Managing Director and vice
president, Phone.com Europe. "Delegates will have access to
highly relevant, personalised MCI content making management of
information during the show far easier."
Phone.com's UP.Link Server Suite, microbrowser and software
development kit, is a comprehensive, open and robust system that
enables interactive Internet information services and value-added
telephony applications on wireless handsets running the
UP.Browser microbrowser. Phone.com's UP.Browser is a WAP
compatible microbrowser designed and optimized for mass-market
wireless telephones. Using UP.Browser, wireless subscribers can
access Web-based information and services. UP.Browser's open and
highly portable architecture can be embedded into different
models of mobile phone and utilize each phone's specific display
and input characteristics, giving network operators a way to way
to reach subscribers and add innovative services.
