KPMG to Present $1 Million Donation to NetAid; Firm That Built Web Site Expected to Make 'Virtual Donation' Onstage
8.10.1999, 17:38
New York (PROTEXT) - KPMG LLP, the professional services firm
that developed and deployed the mega Web site for NetAid, said
that it will donate $1 million to the NetAid Foundation tomorrow
(October 9), to aid in the global campaign against extreme
poverty.
"This donation is but one demonstration that KPMG, its
partners and employees worldwide are truly committed to the
NetAid cause," said Stephen G. Butler, Chairman. Plans are
underway for Butler to present the $1 million check to producer
Quincy Jones -- through a large screen "virtual donation" to the
NetAid Web site -- on stage during Saturday night's concert at
Giants Stadium.
"For the first time, millions will be made aware of a global
social issue through the power of the Internet -- and the mega
Web site that KPMG built in an unprecedented 90 days. We hope
that tens of millions of social conscience will be moved to give
in many different ways by becoming better informed through the
NetAid site, helping make NetAid the success it deserves to be,"
Butler said.
"KPMG is pleased to participate in this landmark project,
which will forever change the way the global community battles
important social issues," Butler said. "As a worldwide leader in
Internet integration, we are gratified that we were called upon
to develop and deploy this window on the world of extreme poverty
-- for all to view, learn and change."
KPMG was invited by Cisco Systems and the United Nations
Development Programme to participate in the NetAid initiative.
KPMG achieved the complex task of developing a Web site
capable of handling 60 million hits per hour, or 16,000 hits per
second, in an unprecedented 90 days, months less than the time
typically needed to build comparable sites. Other mega Web sites
built previously, such as the site for the last Olympic games,
have handled only hundreds of hits each second.
KPMG deployed a team of 50 e-Engineers -- with combined
electronic commerce experience of over 300 person years -- for
the development of the NetAid mega Web site and e-commerce
solutions.
Using experience gained in transforming numerous industries
through technological innovations -- from the newspaper and
advertising industry, to the electric utility industry and the
fashion industry -- KPMG donated that experience to the not-for-
profit world.
