Callaway Golf Staff Professional Annika Sorenstam Claims Second Victory of 1999 LPGA Tour Season
5.10.1999, 10:37
CARLSBAD, Calif. (PROTEXT) - Closing with birdies on four of
the final seven holes yesterday, Callaway Golf (NYSE: ELY) Staff
Professional Annika Sorenstam clinched her second LPGA Tour win
of the year. Sorenstam, 28, used a combination of long drives,
pinpoint iron shots and clutch putting to post a final-round 66
and win the New Albany Golf Classic by three strokes.
Sorenstam, 28, used 10 Callaway Golf(R) clubs in her victory,
including a Callaway Golf Titanium Driver, Big Bertha(R)
Steelhead(TM) 3-wood and 7-wood and Big Bertha(R) X-12(R) Irons.
The event's runner-up used a Great Big Bertha(R) Hawk Eye(R) 3-
wood and Big Bertha X-12 Irons. Callaway Golf Staff Professional
Emilee Klein finished third using 11 Callaway Golf clubs,
including a Great Big Bertha Hawk Eye Titanium Driver and 3-wood,
Big Bertha Steelhead 5-wood and Big Bertha X-12 Irons. According
to the Darrell Survey Company, Callaway Golf was No. 1 in
drivers, fairway woods and irons in play at the New Albany Golf
Classic.
"I was driving it really well, which gave me a lot of short
irons to the greens," said Sorenstam, who now has 16 career LPGA
Tour victories and is one point shy of qualifying for the LPGA
Hall of Fame. "Because I was driving the ball long and in the
fairways, I was able to be aggressive and hit a lot of irons
shots really close to the hole."
Callaway Golf's newest product introduction -- the Hawk Eye
Tungsten Injected Titanium Irons -- is also making news on tour.
The irons have already been put in play on each of the four major
U.S. professional tours in the two weeks they have been available
to tour professionals. At last week's Senior PGA Tour Vantage
Championship, three Callaway Golf Staff Professionals using Hawk
Eye Irons finished in the event's top 10. Bruce Fleisher put a
set in play and shot three rounds in the 60s to finish second and
regain the lead on the senior money list. Jim Dent used his new
Hawk Eye Irons to shoot an opening-round 63, his lowest round of
the year, and finish tied for 10th with Jim Colbert, who posted a
final-round 64 with his new Hawk Eye Irons. According to the
Darrell Survey Company, Callaway Golf was No. 1 in drivers,
fairway woods and irons in play at the Vantage Championship.
