Simulink to Generate Safety-Critical Production Code and Unit
Test Vectors from Simulink Models
Ann Arbor, Mich. (PROTEXT) - Applied Dynamics International,
Inc. (ADI) today announced the release of BEACON for Simulink, an
embedded software development tool used to generate high-
integrity source code and unit test cases directly from
Simulink(R) models. BEACON for Simulink bridges the gap between
controls and software engineers and reduces the time, effort and
cost of embedded software development. Simulink is The MathWorks'
(Natick, MA) modeling and simulation tool used to develop
controllers of dynamic systems. BEACON for Simulink extends the
power of Simulink by seamlessly generating high-integrity
production code and unit test vectors.
BEACON for Simulink consists of three component tools:
Designer, Coder and Tester. The BEACON Designer is used to
specify software design details such as fixed-point scaling,
calibration parameters, software busses via aggregate data types,
code optimizations, and legacy code interfaces. Design details
are added without directly manipulating the Simulink models. This
preserves the models as the pure and untainted source for
behavioral requirements. BEACON for Simulink also supports The
MathWork's Stateflow(R) product. Stateflow is an add-on to
Simulink that is used to model state-based events.
The BEACON Coder generates efficient compiler-independent C
code from the Simulink and Stateflow models. A number of safety
checks are performed during the code generation process, ensuring
a high degree of software reliability and quality.
The BEACON Tester automatically creates unit test vectors,
further enhancing the reusability of the generated software. The
test vectors target common errors such as incorrect Boolean
logic, one-off comparison defects, and numerical overflows. The
Tester provides design-based coverages required by the strict DO-
178B guidelines used by the FAA for Level A software.
