Lima Airport Achieves Steady Progress in First Year of Privatization; Fraport AG Holds 42.75-Percent Share in Lima Airport Partners

Frankfurt, Germany (PROTEXT/ots) - Lima Airport PartnersS.R.L (LAP) - in which Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport ServicesWorldwide holds a 42.75 percent share - is celebrating its firstyear of managing Lima Airport (airport code = LIM). Despite theshort preparation period, the transition to LAP management onFebruary 14, 2001, went smoothly. Since then, LAP has achievedsteady progress in transforming Lima Airport's overallappearance and in improving operational procedures and coststructures. During the first six months, LAP invested some $4million, particularly for enhancing passenger service and theterminal facilities. Later this year, construction will begin on a new shoppingcomplex at the passenger terminal, plus a hotel and parkinggarage. Called "Peru Plaza", the shopping center will featureextensive space for shops, restaurants and other services. Theairport is being developed to provide international servicestandards and to serve as a major gateway for Peru as well as thesurrounding region. A new terminal and a second runway areenvisaged in future years. Lima's Aeropuerto Internacional JorgeChávez - named in honor of the Peruvian aviation pioneer andnational hero - served about 4.1 million passengers in 2001. Tomorrow, LAP's first-year anniversary celebrations will beattended by Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo - underscoringthe airport's significance to the country. Other guests expectedto participate include former President Belaunde, who firstopened Lima Airport in 1964, and Transport Minister Luis Chang.Dr. Wilhelm Bender, Fraport AG's Chairman of the Executive Board,will also be taking part in the event. Winning an international privatization tender, Lima AirportPartners received the concession to operate and develop LimaAirport for 30 years, with an option for a further 10 years.Along with Fraport, the consortium is comprised of twoconstruction firms, Bechtel of the U.S. and Cosapi of Peru.Fraport appointed the LAP management team and is alsoresponsible for key areas such as terminal management, commercialdevelopment and security at Lima Airport.
