US Airways Launches Charlotte-London Service

US Airways launches its service between Charlotte and London this evening with a gala celebration at Charlotte Douglas International Airport led by U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms and with a full flight. Flight 94 is scheduled to depart at 8:25 p.m. from Gate D-2 following a ribbon-cutting ceremony that will include Sen. Helms, Rep. Sue Myrick, Rep. Mel Watt, US Airways Executive Vice President -- Corporate Affairs and General Counsel Lawrence M. Nagin and Charlotte officials. "This is a great day for Charlotte, a great day for North Carolina and a great day for consumers in both the United States and the U.K. US Airways will bring its superior service and much- needed competition to this important international aviation route," Helms said. "Sen. Helms led the way in standing up for competition and for the rights of U.S. consumers and businesses. We would not be here today but for his efforts. US Airways thanks him and the many other governmental, civic and business leaders whose efforts made this flight possible," Nagin said. Nagin said that US Airways looks forward to increasing its international service from Charlotte. Passengers, employees and guests are expected to gather at Gate D-2 at 7:00 this evening for a ceremonial ribbon cutting that includes a bagpipe honor guard and two special guards from the Tower of London who are in Charlotte to mark the occasion. With more than 470 jet and US Airways Express flights daily service almost 100 destinations non-stop, Charlotte is well positioned as an international gateway. US Airways enplaned more than 11 million passengers at Charlotte in 1998. US Airways' flights from Charlotte to London depart at 8:25 p.m., arriving in London at 9:15 the next morning, with the exception of Tuesdays and Thursdays. On those days, the flight departs at 7:10 p.m., arriving at 8:00 a.m. the next day. Flights from London depart at 11:15 a.m. seven days a week, arriving in Charlotte at 3:20 p.m. The Charlotte departure and arrival times are closely tied to those of other US Airways flights to and from Florida, the Southeast and other destinations linked by the Charlotte hub.
