The fight to reduce smoking and the use of tobacco products has gone worldwide with the World Health Organization's recently announced Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI). The movement will have center stage at WHO's 52nd Session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland May 17-26, when Dr. Sid E. Williams, founder and president of Life University in Marietta, GA, will deliver the opening address to the Non- Governmental Organizations (NGO) Forum on Health. "Several decades of research have demonstrated that cigarette smoking is now the major cause of preventable deaths in developed countries," said Dr. Williams. "I am very pleased that Life University can join with the WHO in finding solutions to this critical health care issue." Tobacco products kill 4 million people each year, according to WHO statistics. More than 70 percent of these deaths take place in the developing world. The WHO, under its new Director General, Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland, has identified the tobacco issue as one of her major priorities. To demonstrate the importance of this issue, the Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI) is headed by one of WHO's senior policy makers, Dr. Derek Yach. Dr. Williams and a delegation from Life University, which is a co-sponsor of the event, will participate in the Forum on Health where a number of technical presentations will be made on the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). Life University is home of the world's largest school of chiropractic. It has had a long relationship with the WHO as a coordinating center and data collection center for various research initiatives in world health. ots Original Text Service: Life University Internet: http://www.newsaktuell.de Contact: Randy Southerland, Life University Public Relations (USA) 770- 426-2875, or email, rsouther@life.edu Web site: http://www.life.edu
